Turkish Sour Cherry Drink Recipe: Easy & Homemade

Make Turkish sour cherry drink at home: simmer fresh sour cherries with sugar and water, strain the juice, chill, and serve over crushed ice.

Turkish sour cherry drink is a sweet-tart juice made by simmering fresh sour cherries with sugar and water, then straining and chilling the liquid. It serves 6 and comes together with three ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 650 gr fresh sour cherries
  • 5 cups water

Method

  1. Combine the sugar with the water in a medium-size saucepan and stir the mixture over low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Add the cherries and simmer for about 20 minutes.
  2. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cherries from the pan. Pass them through a strainer, pressing them to extract all the juice. Discard the cherries. Chill the juice for at least 30 minutes and serve over crushed ice.

Sour cherries (vişne) run through Turkish kitchens in many forms, from this cold drink to syrups and desserts. If you want to cook your way through more of them, the Turkish recipes hub collects the classics, and the wider Istanbul food guide maps the rest. For more cold options to pour alongside it, see our roundup of Turkish drinks.
